Integrating mountain catchments with Atlantic and Mediterranean coastal restoration programs
Concept
Atlantic & Mediterranean Coastal Water and Soil Resilience Initiative (AMCWSRI)— an international environmental program that integrates the restoration of mountain watersheds, river basins, coastal areas, and marine ecosystems into a unified water management system.
The program is based on the understanding that the health of the coast is directly dependent on the health of the mountains. Forests, springs, soils, rivers, floodplains, deltas, and the sea are part of a single hydrological cycle and cannot effectively recover independently.
The main principle:
A healthy coastline starts with healthy mountains.
Mission of the program
To create a unified system for managing natural water resources from mountain watersheds to the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, ensuring the long-term sustainability of ecosystems, water resources, agriculture and coastal areas.
Main tasks
The program is aimed at:
restoration of mountain watersheds;
increase in fresh water accumulation;
restoration of springs;
reduction of erosion;
reducing flood risks;
restoration of floodplains and swamps;
protection of aquifers;
restoration of deltas and lagoons;
protection of the coast from erosion;
prevention of salinization;
restoration of coastal and marine ecosystems.
Unified system "From the mountains to the sea"
AMCWSRI views the entire area as a continuous natural system.
Mountains
Form water.
Forests
They accumulate moisture.
Springs
Provides constant underground drainage.
Rivers
Transport water and nutrients.
Floodplains
Slows down floods.
Replenish groundwater.
Deltas
They purify water.
Protect aquifers.
Coast
Protects the land from the sea.
Ocean
Starts a new water cycle.
Geographic coverage
The program is focused on the countries of the Atlantic and Mediterranean basins.
The priority regions are:
Morocco;
Western Sahara;
Spain;
Portugal;
France;
Italy;
Algeria;
Tunisia;
other countries of the Mediterranean and Atlantic coast.
Moreover, the concept can be adapted to any mountainous coastal region of the world.
Integration with DREVO Living Mountains

increasing biodiversity;
creation of a unified system for managing natural resources from mountain peaks to the ocean.
Project mission
Atlantic & Mediterranean Coastal Water and Soil Resilience Initiative (AMCWSRI)is an international platform that unites all technologies and areasDREVO Living Mountainsinto a unified strategy for restoring the natural water cycle. The program recognizes that coastal protection is impossible without restoring mountain watersheds, and the resilience of mountain ecosystems is impossible without healthy rivers, floodplains, deltas, and marine ecosystems. That's why AMCWSRI links water, soil, forests, agriculture, climate, and biodiversity into a unified landscape management system—from the first drop of rain on the mountain top to its return to the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
